Over the past three to four years I have had a number of customers ask me this question. As the Canadian Dollar approached parity with the American dollar a few days ago. I get asked all the time does buying an American car really save you money. The answer is you need to do your homework. Here are the things to consider:

One: Are you paying cash for the car, or are you leasing and financing?
Two: Are you looking at a high end cars of more average vehicles?
Three: Are you looking at new cars or nearly new cars?
Four: Do you care about warranty?
Five: Do you care about resale value?

After you have answered all these questions, and then looked over the numbers you need to factor in the following costs.
One: Taxes in Canada and in the United States as well.
Two: Does the Company provide a release letter, and at what cost
Three: Are any modification required to import the car.
Four: Does the warranty transfer, if not what is the cost for a warranty on the vehicle.
Five: What are the transportation costs, etc.
Six: What provincial inspection and documentation charges are required.
Seven: what is the cost of a similar vehicle in Canada.

Based on these questions, and the numbers on both vehicles you can then make an informed decision on what makes sense for you.

Before you make the call make sure you pull a Car-Fax report and a Car-Proof report and ideally a 3rd party inspection for piece of mind.

You also want to watch out for Salvage tittle vehicles, rebuilt vehicles or vehicles that have traveled from State to state. If there are questions about a vehicles history, or you can’t get answers to all of your questions don’t buy the vehicle.
